ELECTRIC VEHICLES - Battery Capacity and Range
Battery technology is at
the heart of EV development. Unlike gasoline, that is quantified only
through gallons or liters, three parameters directly affect the electricity that
gets into the batteries: voltage, intensity and the number of phases. Playing with those
parameters will allow to put more or less power into the car, having to
wait more or less to charge it, beign able to go further or not with the
car.
A normal EV can nowadays
drive 100 miles (160 km) on a single charge. At home, with a normal plug
(230 Volts, 16Amps, i.e. 3.68 kw), this means charging the whole battery
in slightly more than 6 hours. However, the normal user won't need to
recharge the whole battery every night, but simply adding the needed kwh
used during the day.
